  It was an early start for our journey to Deer Lake, Newfoundland through Toronto.  The high temperature in Deer Lake today was 27°, about 7° warmer than average.
   Newfoundland time is 1.5 hours ahead of Toronto time.
  Latitude 49.1731 north close to Vancouver’s latitude which is 49.28 north.
  The plane landed at Deer Lake airport about 6:30. It was delayed 20 minutes in Toronto to have its secondary radio replaced. The Deer Lake Airport is small. We left the plane by portable stairs and walked to the arrival hall.  There was room for five or six planes, the size of an Airbus 319 (135 passengers) and smaller.  We took a taxi to the Lakeview Bed and Breakfast in Deer Lake.
  The town of Deer Lake is about a 10 minute drive from the airport on Deer Lake.  After leaving our luggage in our room we walked about 10 minutes to Jungle Jim’s Pub & Grill where we ate either fish tacos with Greek salad or chicken fingers with Greek salad.  On the way back to the bed and breakfast, we stopped for chocolate dipped soft ice cream cones. The walk was pleasant, no jackets needed.             Total steps 15,417

   This morning there were many wispy clouds, but no fog, the temperature was 13 °C and a moderate wind, that got stronger with gusts over 65 km per hour in the afternoon when the high was 21°C with fewer clouds. Today we had a later start. The coach – a Prevost H3-45 - departed at 9 a.m. for a three-hour tour of St. John’s with a local guide, Tom, from McCarthy’s Party tours.  Lynn and Janet decided to skip the city tour.   St. John’s is one of the oldest settlements in North America with St. Augustine, Florida, (Spanish) and Quebec City (French) also claiming the distinction.  August 5, 1583 Englishman Sir Humphrey Gilbert laid claim to Newfoundland, England’s first overseas colony. This is commemorated at Harbourside Park, near the old King’s Wharf.   Breakfast was served after 8 a.m. We joined two retired couples from the Stratford area of Ontario and a young couple from southern Ontario. They all had rented cars and were touring Newfoundland. Hot breakfast choices were French toast with homemade blueberry sauce and a homemade scone or two fried eggs with three breakfast sausages and a homemade scone and coffee or tea plus optional toast, cereal and orange juice.  Just as we were finishing breakfast the fifth couple, middle-aged Torontonians, arrived in the dining room.       The morning temperature was 16 °C and very little wind.  The sky was partly cloudy and there was distant fog on the low mountain range. After breakfast we went for a walk on one of the many walking trails in Deer Lake, following the path along the lake for several kilometers.
